INTRODUCTION

The R129-generation Mercedes-Benz SL arrived as one of the most sophisticated and desirable grand tourers of its era. Designed under Bruno Sacco and engineered with the depth for which Mercedes-Benz was renowned, it combined effortless V8 performance, advanced safety technology and timeless proportions within a roadster built to cross continents.

For a small number of customers, however, the standard 500 SL was only the starting point.

Built during the formative cooperation period between Mercedes-Benz and the independently operated AMG, this 1991 500 SL 6.0 AMG represents a particularly desirable chapter in the history of both companies. Beginning as an Arctic White 500 SL, it received AMG’s enlarged, hand-built 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, together with revised suspension, signature monoblock wheels, bespoke bodywork and extensive exterior colour coding. About 50 pre-merger SL60s were produced and this exact one is believed to be 1 of only 8 produced in right hand drive.

Delivered new to its first customer in Japan and now showing 66,844 km, it retains the elegance, refinement and engineering integrity of the original R129 while adding the individuality and performance character that defined AMG before it became part of Mercedes-Benz.

An elegant Mercedes-Benz roadster, transformed during AMG’s most collectible era.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS

This rare 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL 6.0 AMG is finished in Arctic White over Black Leather, with a contrasting Black folding fabric soft top. Its formal Mercedes-Benz vehicle data record confirms a December 1991 build, a shipment date of 14 December 1991 and its original specification as a 500 SL Roadster. Pre-merger period relates to vehicles produced between 1991-1993. Around 50 were made and only 8 in right hand drive.

The car was subsequently transformed with AMG’s enlarged 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, replacing the standard 5.0-litre specification. Pre-Merger 6.0-litre AMG conversions are generally understood to have produced approximately 380 bhp, supported by revised suspension intended to sharpen the SL’s performance and road behaviour.

Its exterior is distinguished by a bespoke AMG body treatment, extensive colour coding and signature monoblock wheels. Together, these changes give the R129 greater presence without compromising the restrained Bruno Sacco design that has made the model increasingly admired.

The cabin retains its original Black Leather specification and includes electrically adjustable front seats with memory, memory mirrors, automatic climate control, Becker Mexico CD radio and rear seats in place of the standard luggage board.

MODEL HISTORY

Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the long-running R107, the R129-generation SL represented a major advancement for Mercedes-Benz. It combined a rigid body structure with an automatically operated soft top, an automatically deploying rollover bar and integral seats designed to improve occupant protection.

The 500 SL initially occupied the top position in the model range. Its 5.0-litre M119 V8 featured four-valve cylinder-head technology and delivered strong naturally aspirated performance through a four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

AMG remained independently operated during this period, although its relationship with Mercedes-Benz was becoming increasingly formalised. In October 1990, the two companies entered a cooperation agreement covering vehicle development, production, sales and servicing, allowing AMG products to become available through the Mercedes-Benz dealer network from 1991.

During this cooperation era, customers could commission substantially reworked AMG versions of existing Mercedes-Benz models. Period 500 SL 6.0 conversions were based on the R129 platform and typically involved enlarging the M119 V8, together with revisions to the suspension, wheels and exterior presentation.

These early conversions preceded the formally designated SL 60 AMG, which entered production in 1993. Mercedes-Benz documentation therefore continued to identify earlier examples by their original 500 SL designation, even where significant AMG modifications were subsequently carried out.

Produced before AMG became fully integrated within Mercedes-Benz, these cars represent the transition between AMG’s origins as an independent engineering specialist and the official performance marque it would later become.

FINAL SUMMARY

This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL 6.0 AMG represents a rare interpretation of one of the most accomplished grand tourers of its era. It combines the elegant proportions and engineering substance of the early R129 with the bespoke performance work and visual character associated with AMG’s pre-merger period.

Finished in Arctic White over Black Leather, powered by a hand-built 6.0-litre naturally aspirated AMG V8 and showing 66,874 km, it is supported by a formal Mercedes-Benz vehicle data record confirming its original specification, December 1991 build details and major assembly numbers.

Delivered new to Japan and maintained most recently by Sandersons Mercedes-Benz in Sydney, it offers a compelling connection to the period when an AMG was not simply selected from a model range, it was individually created from an already exceptional Mercedes-Benz.

A landmark SL, transformed before AMG became the establishment.
