GT4 Origins.
INTRODUCTION
We remember when Porsche announced the Cayman GT4 more than a decade ago; it reportedly sold out on the same day. With a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six, six-speed manual transmission and Porsche GT engineering, it introduced the GT4 nameplate and became one of the most engaging and collectible driver’s cars of its era.
This exceptional one-owner example has travelled just 4,500 kilometres and is believed to be among the lowest-kilometre examples in Australia. Recently major-serviced by Porsche Centre Willoughby and accompanied by the balance of a two-year Porsche Extended Warranty, it offers exceptional provenance and peace of mind.
Finished in Sapphire Blue Metallic (the model’s launch colour) over Black Leather and Alcantara, with Carbon Race Bucket Seats and contrasting yellow stitching, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a reference example from the very beginning of the GT4 story.
VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS
This MY16 Porsche Cayman GT4 has travelled just 4,500 km from new and has remained with one owner. Finished in Sapphire Blue Metallic over a Black Leather and Alcantara interior with yellow stitching, it combines one of the model’s most recognisable colours with a focused and carefully considered factory specification.
Satin Black wheels and matching black rear-wing supports sharpen the exterior presentation, while Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System add further functionality. An aluminium-look fuel-filler cap provides a subtle motorsport-inspired detail.
Inside, Carbon Race Bucket Seats establish the intent of the cabin. Racing Yellow seatbelts and a matching yellow 12-o’clock steering-wheel marker introduce a measured contrast, supported by the Carbon Interior Package, carbon centre-console trim and illuminated carbon-fibre door-sill guards. This is one of the best interiors we have ever seen on a GT4.
The car has been maintained exclusively within the official Porsche dealer network, with its most recent major service completed by Porsche Centre Willoughby in May 2026 at 4,449 km. Accompanied by two keys, books and the balance of a two-year Porsche Extended Warranty, it presents as a notably complete example of the original Cayman GT4.

MODEL HISTORY
The Cayman was introduced as Porsche’s compact, fixed-roof, mid-engined sports car, built around one of the most naturally balanced layouts available to a performance coupé. With its flat-six engine positioned ahead of the rear axle, the Cayman delivered exceptional composure, precision and predictability from the outset, yet Porsche carefully maintained a clear hierarchy between it and the Porsche Motorsport-developed 911 GT models.
The second-generation 981 Cayman refined that formula through a lighter structure, longer wheelbase, wider track and more sophisticated chassis. The Cayman S and Cayman GTS progressively increased performance and sharpened the platform’s character, but neither represented a full Porsche Motorsport development. The underlying potential was always evident; what the model lacked was the complete GT treatment.
That changed with the arrival of the Cayman GT4 in 2015.
The 981 GT4 became the first Cayman developed as a Porsche GT road car and the first mid-engined model admitted into the marque’s modern GT family. Its naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six was derived from the contemporary 911 Carrera S and produced 283 kW and 420 Nm. Rather than fitting a dual-clutch transmission, Porsche paired the engine exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, reinforcing the direct, mechanical connection central to the car’s appeal.
Its significance extended well beyond the powertrain. The GT4 sat approximately 30 mm lower than a conventional Cayman and incorporated extensive 911 GT3-derived chassis engineering, including revised suspension, larger brakes, adjustable components and GT-specific steering calibration. Functional aerodynamics, including a redesigned front section and fixed rear wing, also made it the first Cayman to generate downforce at both axles.
Porsche quoted 0–100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, a top speed of 295 km/h and a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes 40 seconds. More importantly, the 981 GT4 proved that Porsche’s mid-engined platform could support a genuine Porsche Motorsport-developed model. Its success established the foundation for the later 718 Cayman GT4, GT4 Clubsport and GT4 RS, creating an entirely new branch of Porsche’s GT lineage.
FINAL SUMMARY
This one-owner MY16 Porsche Cayman GT4 brings together the qualities that define a highly considered example of the original mid-engined Porsche GT car.
Its naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six, six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout deliver the direct, involving formula that established the model. Sapphire Blue Metallic is complemented by Satin Black exterior details, while the Black Leather and Alcantara cabin combines Carbon Race Bucket Seats, carbon-fibre trim and Racing Yellow accents.
With just 4,500 km travelled, three recorded Porsche main dealer services, two keys, books and the balance of a two-year Porsche Extended Warranty, it offers a strong combination of provenance, specification and preservation.
This is the Cayman that proved Porsche’s mid-engined platform belonged within the GT family.
