The Porsche 993 has long been regarded as the sweet spot of the 911 bloodline: compact, tactile, wonderfully analogue and the final chapter of Porsche's air-cooled story. The best restomods understand that these qualities don't need replacing; they need preserving.

This Works 993 GTR does exactly that. Starting with a desirable 1996 Varioram Carrera 4, Retro Works Yorkshire comprehensively rebuilt and reimagined the car around everything that makes the 993 special. Its enlarged 3.8-litre air-cooled flat-six was fully rebuilt by legendary Porsche engine specialists Strasse UK using Mahle components and produces a stated 335 bhp.

Finished in Porsche Agate Grey over a beautifully handcrafted Tan interior and travelled just 5,823 km since completion, it preserves the romance of a classic air-cooled Porsche while adding the freshness, confidence and usability of a comprehensively renewed build.

This Works 993 GTR is presented in a highly considered specification, having travelled just 5,823 km since completion of its documented Retro Works Yorkshire transformation.

The foundation is a desirable and superb example of a 1996 993 Carrera 4, combining the later Varioram engine architecture with all-wheel drive. The Retro Works build was completed on 20/07/2020 at 77,804 km and included a comprehensive engine rebuild by renowned UK Porsche specialists Strasse UK. Enlarged to a 3.8 litre Mahle piston powerplant, the naturally aspirated air-cooled flat-six produces a stated 335 bhp.

Finished in Porsche Agate Grey with contrasting black stripes over a bespoke tan interior with hand-woven elements, the car combines classic Porsche character with the craftsmanship and individuality of the Works GTR philosophy. Full-body paint protection film protects the exterior, while the underside has been Cryoblast treated.

Since completion, the car has received three services in Australia including Porsche Centres & specialists, most recently a major service in June 2026 that included a new clutch. MODEL HISTORY‍

Porsche has spent more than six decades evolving the 911 without losing the basic ideas that made it famous: a rear-engined layout, compact proportions, distinctive styling and a driving experience built around feel rather than excess. Few generations capture that philosophy better than the 993.

Introduced in 1993 as the successor to the 964, the 993 became the fourth generation of the 911 and ultimately the final one powered by an air-cooled flat-six. Porsche substantially modernised the car with a new multi-link rear suspension, greater refinement and a more contemporary body, while keeping the mechanical character and proportions that linked it directly to earlier 911s. Later naturally aspirated examples gained the Varioram intake system, while Carrera 4 models added all-wheel drive, making the later 993 one of the most complete evolutions of Porsche’s original air-cooled formula.

Retro Works Yorkshire approaches that heritage from a different perspective. Rather than trying to redesign the 993 into something unrecognisable, its philosophy is centred around taking the qualities people already love about classic Porsches and rebuilding the experience around them — combining classic style and character with greater performance, reliability, comfort, craftsmanship and usability.

The Works 993 GTR is its interpretation of that idea. The familiar 993 architecture remains at the centre, but the car is comprehensively rebuilt and given a more individual character through the Works GTR widebody, revised chassis and mechanical package, upgraded air-cooled engine and extensively handcrafted interior.
