A Little Love Letter, Written In Rosso Officina.

INTRODUCTION

The 695 Biposto represents the moment Abarth took the modern 500 as far as it possibly could.

Rather than simply adding power, its engineers went looking for everything that could be removed. Rear seats disappeared. Air conditioning, audio and conventional door trims were sacrificed. Weight fell to just 997 kilograms, while competition-derived hardware transformed what remained.

The result was raw, compact and mechanically expressive — a modern interpretation of Carlo Abarth's original philosophy that less weight, greater response and purposeful engineering mattered more than excess.

And while the Biposto was offered in a single matte grey finish, a further 99 were produced in Rosso Officina for the Ferrari dealer network — commissioned to serve Ferrari customers as courtesy and service cars.

It is an extraordinary little footnote in Italian automotive history: Ferrari choosing Abarth’s most extreme modern road car for its own customers.

This is #23 — one of only two delivered new to Australia.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS

This Australian-delivered 2016 Abarth 695 Biposto is number 23 of the 99-car Rosso Officina series and one of only two delivered new to Australia.

Displaying just 13,839 km from new, it retains the five-speed manual gearbox and pairs its Rosso Officina exterior with titanium-coloured leather and Alcantara, carbon-shelled Abarth Corsa seats by Sabelt and the Poggipolini tubular titanium rear brace in place of conventional rear seating.

The significance of the colour goes well beyond appearance. The regular Biposto was catalogued in matte Performance Grey; the Rosso Officina cars were instead produced specifically for the Ferrari dealer network, making them a distinct numbered series rather than simply an alternative paint choice.

Mechanical specification includes the Akrapovič exhaust with active valve and titanium tailpipes, mechanical self-locking differential, Brembo braking and Extreme Shox adjustable dampers.

Servicing includes a timing belt replacement in April 2022 and the most recent service completed in February 2025 at 13,676 km.

It is accompanied by two keys, books and manuals, its authenticity certificate, Abarth toolkit and, importantly, its original single-hump striped bonnet, which is included with the car as a second bonnet.

MODEL HISTORY

The 695 Biposto arrived at an important point in Abarth's modern history.

The Fiat 500 had returned in 2007 and brought the Scorpion badge back into mainstream consciousness, but Carlo Abarth's reputation had been built on a far more focused formula: extracting greater performance through reduced weight, sharper response and competition thinking applied to otherwise familiar machinery.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014, fifty years after the original Fiat Abarth 695, the Biposto became perhaps the clearest modern expression of that philosophy.

Its development drew heavily from the 695 Assetto Corse competition car. Power came from a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 140 kW and 250 Nm, while Brembo braking with floating front discs, Extreme Shox adjustable damping and a mechanical self-locking differential gave the car hardware far beyond that of a conventional hot hatch.

Reduction was equally important.

Rear seats, air conditioning, audio equipment, conventional door trims, xenon headlamps, fog lights and electric windows were removed in pursuit of lower weight. Carbon-shelled Abarth Corsa seats by Sabelt and a tubular titanium rear brace by Poggipolini helped bring dry weight down to just 997 kilograms.

With 140 kW moving less than a tonne, the Biposto could accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, making it the fastest road-going Abarth of its time.

Its motorsport connection was equally tangible. Shortly before the Biposto's public debut, a factory-supported Abarth Motorsport entry contested the 2014 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour with the 695 Assetto Corse, winning its class and finishing eighteenth outright at Mount Panorama.

Buyers could take the concept further through specialised equipment packages. The Track Kit incorporated competition-focused equipment including Abarth Corsa by Sabelt carbon-shell seating and harnesses, while the optional Bacci Romano dog-ring gearbox offered an even closer connection to the race car.

Unlike many commemorative Abarth editions that followed, the Biposto's identity was grounded primarily in engineering rather than cosmetic treatment. Its purpose was expressed through weight, braking, suspension, drivetrain and the removal of anything considered unnecessary.

Rosso Officina added an entirely different kind of significance.

The standard Biposto was offered in its distinctive Performance Grey, but 99 additional cars were produced in red for distribution through the Ferrari dealer network. Intended to serve Ferrari customers as dealer service and courtesy cars before ultimately entering private ownership, they were individually numbered and accompanied by certificates of authenticity.

It is a wonderfully unlikely piece of Italian automotive history: Ferrari turning to the smallest, lightest and most uncompromising modern Abarth for its own customers.

That connection makes the Rosso Officina cars more than simply rare Bipostos. They represent a specific 99-car chapter within the model's story, combining Abarth's most serious modern engineering with an unusual provenance linked directly to the Ferrari dealer network.

That is why the 695 Biposto matters.

Two seats. Under a tonne. 140 kW. Competition-derived hardware.

A modern Abarth built according to the same fundamental principle that made the original cars so compelling: start with less, then make every remaining part matter.

FINAL SUMMARY

Few cars of this scale were ever engineered with this much intent.

The Biposto took the familiar outline of the modern 500 and stripped it back to the fundamentals: 997 kilograms, two seats, a five-speed manual and competition-derived hardware throughout.

#23 adds another layer entirely.

One of just 99 Rosso Officina examples produced for the Ferrari dealer network, and one of only two delivered new to Australia, it sits within a particularly unusual chapter of modern Abarth history.

With just 13,839 km from new, complete servicing, its accompanying authenticity certificate and its original single-hump striped bonnet included with the car, it retains the supporting details that matter.

Small in footprint. Serious in intent. Exceptional in provenance.
