INTRODUCTION

There is something irresistible about the last car of its kind. Not because it is simply the newest or the fastest, but because it carries the confidence of a machine built after years of learning — when the engineers know exactly what the platform can become, and are finally allowed to take it there.

The AMG GT Black Series was that moment for the first-generation GT. Affalterbach took a car already full of character and stripped away the compromise: a flat-plane-crank V8, serious aero, extensive carbon fibre and a chassis sharpened until it felt closer to GT racing than grand touring. The result was fast enough to take the Nürburgring production-car record.

Only 28 came to Australia. At just 5,600 km, this is one of those rare cars that feels special enough to preserve, but far too alive not to drive.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS

This 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has travelled just 5,600 km and is one of only 28 examples allocated to Australia, from approximately 1,700 produced worldwide. Finished in Designo Selenite Grey Magno over black Nappa leather and Dinamica with orange contrast stitching, it gives the Black Series exactly the right presence: technical, sophisticated and menacing.

Its hand-built M178 LS2 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 was comprehensively re-engineered around a flat-plane crankshaft, with new camshafts, exhaust manifolds and turbocharger hardware. It produces 537 kW and 800 Nm, sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a strengthened seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT. 0–100 km/h takes 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h arrives in under nine seconds and top speed is 325 km/h.

The aerodynamics are equally serious. An adjustable carbon-fibre front splitter, vented carbon bonnet, almost fully enclosed underbody and two-stage carbon rear wing combine to generate more than 400 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The upper wing incorporates an electronically controlled flap that can alter its angle by 20 degrees, balancing downforce, braking stability and drag depending on the driving situation.

Australian cars received the AMG Track Package as standard, adding a lightweight titanium roll cage and four-point harnesses. Carbon bucket seats, AMG carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable coil-over suspension, manually adjustable camber and anti-roll bars, nine-stage traction control and bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres complete one of AMG's most technically ambitious road cars.

With just 5,600 km travelled, this example is further supported by full Mercedes-Benz main dealer service history, with documented services completed in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

MODEL HISTORY

AMG’s story has always been rooted in taking Mercedes-Benz machinery further than convention allowed. Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded AMG in 1967 after working on Mercedes racing engines, and just four years later the enormous AMG 300 SEL 6.8 announced the company to the world with a class victory and second overall at the 1971 24 Hours of Spa. That combination of Mercedes engineering, independent thinking and motorsport obsession became the foundation of the AMG identity.

The Black Series is perhaps the purest expression of that philosophy. Introduced in 2006 with the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, the badge was reserved for a very small number of AMG models where outright performance took priority over the usual compromises of a road car. The CLK 63, SL 65, C 63 Coupé and SLS AMG Black Series followed, each using wider tracks, reduced weight, more aggressive aerodynamics and increasingly serious chassis hardware to bring AMG’s motorsport thinking onto the road.

Then came the AMG GT. Launched in 2014, it was only the second sports car developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG, following the SLS AMG, and represented a major step for Affalterbach: a sports car designed from the outset around AMG’s own performance philosophy rather than being derived from an existing Mercedes-Benz model.

The platform evolved methodically through the GT S, GT C, GT R and GT R Pro. Each version became sharper and more focused, while the parallel development of the AMG GT3 racing programme gave Mercedes-AMG an increasingly deep understanding of the car’s aerodynamics, chassis and behaviour at the limit.

By the time the GT Black Series arrived in 2020, AMG had spent years learning exactly what the platform could do. For the sixth Black Series model, it went far beyond adding power. The familiar cross-plane AMG V8 was comprehensively re-engineered around a flat-plane crankshaft; carbon fibre spread through the body and structure; the suspension gained extensive adjustment; and its enormous aerodynamic package drew directly from AMG’s competition experience.

That work produced a car capable of setting a 6:43.616 Nürburgring Nordschleife production-car lap in 2020, making it the fastest series-production road car around the circuit at the time. More importantly, it confirmed just how far AMG had taken the original GT architecture.

The GT Black Series therefore occupies a particularly significant place in AMG history. It sits at the end of the first-generation AMG GT story, at the top of the Black Series lineage, and represents one of the clearest modern expressions of the idea that started AMG in the first place: take a Mercedes, apply everything learned through motorsport, and keep going until very little is left on the table.

FINAL SUMMARY

The AMG GT Black Series represents a particularly compelling kind of collector car: the final expression of a platform developed after years of learning, with very little held back.

Its 537 kW flat-plane-crank V8 gives it a completely different character from the AMG GTs that came before it, while the carbon construction, active aerodynamics, adjustable chassis and Australian-spec Track Package show just how seriously Affalterbach approached the project.

Only 28 examples were allocated to Australia, from approximately 1,700 produced worldwide. With just 5,600 km travelled, this example remains genuinely low kilometre without feeling too precious to experience as intended.

Designo Selenite Grey Magno gives the Black Series a sophisticated, technical presence, allowing the exposed carbon, enormous aero and motorsport hardware to define the car visually.

Special enough to preserve. Far too alive not to drive.
