INTRODUCTION

In 2009, Aston Martin did something wonderfully simple: it took its smallest sports car, fitted its 5.9-litre naturally aspirated V12 and kept a six-speed manual between the driver and the rear wheels.

Even then, the V12 Vantage felt like a car from another time. Compact, mechanical and unapologetically analogue, it arrived just as the industry was beginning to move towards smaller engines, turbocharging and increasingly automated gearboxes.

That is why Jeremy Clarkson's drive in the Top Gear Series 13 finale became such a memorable moment. Rather than simply celebrating a new Aston Martin, the segment carried the feeling that cars like this might not be around for much longer.

With hindsight, that concern feels remarkably well placed.

MODEL HISTORY

The original V12 Vantage began with one of those wonderfully simple ideas that rarely survives contact with production: take Aston Martin's smallest sports car and give it the company's largest engine.

Previewed by the V12 Vantage RS Concept in 2007, the idea generated sufficient enthusiasm for Aston Martin to develop it into a production model. What followed was much more than a V8 Vantage with another four cylinders squeezed beneath its bonnet.

The 5.9-litre naturally aspirated V12 produced 380 kW and 570 Nm, connected exclusively to a six-speed manual transaxle at the rear. A carbon-fibre propeller shaft, limited-slip differential, forged 19-inch wheels and enormous carbon-ceramic brakes were all incorporated into the package, creating one of the most focused road-going Aston Martins of its era.

The bodywork was similarly purposeful. Prominent carbon-fibre bonnet vents helped extract heat from the tightly packaged V12, while the deeper front splitter and carbon rear diffuser gave the car greater aerodynamic intent without disturbing the compact proportions that made the original Vantage so appealing.

It was that combination that gave the V12 Vantage such significance from the outset.

Where Aston Martin's larger twelve-cylinder cars traditionally leaned towards grand touring, the V12 Vantage put the same theatre into something shorter, tighter and more immediate. Most importantly, the original model remained manual, leaving three pedals and a conventional gear lever at the centre of the experience.

Production was correspondingly limited, with 1,199 examples of the original V12 Vantage Coupe produced, of which only 470 were right-hand drive.

Top Gear sensed what this recipe represented almost immediately. When Jeremy Clarkson drove it during the closing sequence of the Series 13 finale, the segment became less about judging the car and more about contemplating whether machinery like it could continue to exist.

That is what makes the original V12 Vantage increasingly compelling today.
