INTRODUCTION

Porsche’s relationship with Australia began with two cars.

In 1951, Norman Hamilton brought the first Porsche 356s into the country, beginning a relationship that would make Australia Porsche’s second export market outside Europe and its first right-hand-drive market. Seventy years later, Porsche decided that history deserved more than a commemorative badge.

It built a GT3.

The 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition became the first 911 GT product Porsche had ever created specifically for one market, and the first Porsche special edition developed exclusively for Australia. Based on the 992 GT3 Touring, it retained everything that makes the modern GT3 so intoxicating: a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six that charges to 9,000 rpm, rear-wheel drive and the cleaner, more understated Touring silhouette.

Based specifically on the 992.1 GT3 Touring, its significance extends beyond rarity: it was the first time Porsche had based a market-specific special edition on a 911 GT product, and the first Porsche special edition created specifically for the Australian market.

Underneath the commemorative specification sits a proper GT3. Its 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six produces 375 kW and 470 Nm, reaching maximum power at 8,400 rpm before continuing to a 9,000 rpm limiter. MODEL HISTORY

Porsche’s Australian story began remarkably early in the company’s history.

In 1951, Melbourne businessman Norman Hamilton was travelling through Europe when a chance encounter with a Porsche development car on Austria’s Grossglockner Pass ultimately led him to the Porsche factory. A handshake agreement followed, making Hamilton only Porsche’s second agent outside Europe.

Later that year, a Fish Silver Grey 356 Cabriolet and maroon 356 Coupé arrived in Melbourne. Australia became Porsche’s second export market outside Europe and its first right-hand-drive market, giving this country an unusually important place in the marque’s international story almost from the beginning.

Running parallel to that Australian history is the evolution of Porsche’s most focused road-going 911.

The GT3 name first appeared with the 996 generation in 1999, continuing a philosophy long associated with Porsche’s RS models: naturally aspirated power, reduced weight, motorsport-derived engineering and a chassis developed with serious circuit use in mind. Across successive generations, GT3 became one of Porsche’s defining enthusiast models and one of the clearest links between its road and racing programmes.

The 992-generation GT3 represented a major technical step. Its 4.0-litre flat-six was closely related to Porsche’s competition engines, producing 375 kW and revving to 9,000 rpm. More significantly, the 992 became the first production 911 to use a double-wishbone front axle, replacing the traditional MacPherson-strut arrangement with architecture heavily influenced by Porsche Motorsport.

The Touring Package carries another piece of Porsche history. Its name traces back to the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring, where serious mechanical ability was paired with a more discreet presentation. Porsche revived the idea for the modern GT3, retaining the engine, chassis and intent of the standard GT3 while removing the large fixed rear wing.

Then, in 2021, those two histories converged.

To celebrate 70 years since Hamilton introduced Porsche to Australia, Porsche created the 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition. It was unprecedented: the first market-specific special edition based on a 911 GT product, and the first Porsche special edition developed specifically for Australia.

Rather than simply applying anniversary badging, Porsche went back to 1951. Fish Silver Grey Metallic was developed as a contemporary interpretation of the colour of Hamilton’s original 356 Cabriolet. Graphite Blue and Crayon defined the interior, Madraskaro check brought a distinctly heritage-inspired character, and edition-specific details extended from the dashboard and illuminated sill plates to the vehicle keys and dedicated indoor cover.

Its significance therefore reaches well beyond a production number. It connects one of Porsche’s most celebrated modern GT cars directly to the moment the marque’s Australian story began.

For an Australian Porsche collector, very few modern 911s carry a stronger local connection.
