One Of AMG's Rarest GT

‍

INTRODUCTION
‍

The original AMG GT spawned some extraordinary variants. Few were produced in numbers as small as the GT R PRO. Production was limited to just 750 examples worldwide, with only 15 allocated to the Australian market.

That scarcity alone makes the PRO significant, but the more interesting part is what AMG chose not to change.

The already formidable GT R produced 430 kW and 700 Nm from its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. For the PRO, AMG left those figures exactly where they were and went looking for lap time elsewhere. More aero. Less weight. Manually adjustable coilover suspension. Lighter forged wheels. Greater chassis rigidity. The result was 7:04.632 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, roughly six seconds quicker than the GT R with exactly the same engine output.

CHROME TEMPLE exclusively offers one of just 15 Australian-delivered examples. It has travelled just 1,257 km, is finished in Magnetite Black Metallic, wearing green motorsport-style livery and features an extensive factory specification.

We are convinced that the first-generation AMG GT will be looked back on as a golden era of Mercedes-Benz sports cars.

Maybe it’s time everyone else did too.

VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS

With just 1,257 km from new, this Australian-delivered GT R PRO presents in exceptional condition throughout, as expected from the mileage.

It is one of only 750 GT R PROs produced globally, with just 15 allocated to Australia, placing it among the most scarce road-going derivatives of the original AMG GT platform.

The car is protected by full PPF and finished in Magnetite Black Metallic, with a Black / Anthracite ARTICO and DINAMICA interior, and currently wears green motorsport-style livery.

Its factory specification includes some of the PRO’s most desirable and expensive hardware, including the AMG High-Performance Ceramic Composite Braking System, AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre Packages I & II, carbon-fibre roof, AMG Track Package, lightweight forged wheels and titanium exhaust system.

The PRO’s extensively reworked aerodynamic package incorporates an enlarged carbon-fibre front splitter, carbon-fibre flics, extraction louvres above the front wheels, carbon-fibre side skirt inserts, carbon-fibre mirror housings, rear wheel-arch aero elements, revised rear diffuser and fixed carbon-fibre rear wing.

These changes are functional. At 250 km/h, the revised aerodynamic package generates an additional 99 kg of downforce compared with the GT R.

Underneath, the GT R’s electronically controlled suspension was replaced by a motorsport-derived manually adjustable AMG coilover system, allowing adjustment of spring preload, compression and rebound.

A carbon-fibre front anti-roll bar, adjustable hollow-tube rear anti-roll bar, additional Uniball bearings on the upper rear wishbones and carbon-fibre rear underbody shear panel further improve chassis precision and rigidity.

Weight reduction formed another major part of the program, with the PRO approximately 25 kg lighter than the GT R.

Yet AMG deliberately left the engine output unchanged.

The hand-built 4.0-litre M178 twin-turbocharged V8 produces 430 kW and 700 Nm, sending power to the rear wheels through the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch transmission.

Rear-axle steering, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and active engine and transmission mounts complete the package.

The result was a 7:04.632 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap, roughly six seconds quicker than the GT R despite identical engine output.

MODEL HISTORY

The Mercedes-AMG GT represented a significant new chapter for Affalterbach.

Following the SLS AMG, the GT was developed as a dedicated two-seat sports car around a front-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive architecture. Its hand-built V8 sat behind the front axle, while the dual-clutch transmission was positioned at the rear in a transaxle arrangement to improve weight distribution.

The platform quickly became the basis for an increasingly serious family of performance cars.

GT. GT S. GT C.

Then came the GT R.

Developed with greater influence from AMG’s motorsport programs, the GT R introduced wider bodywork, active aerodynamics, rear-axle steering, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and a nine-stage traction-control system.

Its hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged M178 V8 produced 430 kW and 700 Nm.

It was already an exceptionally capable car.

The GT R PRO took a different approach to moving the platform forward.

There was no increase in power.

Instead, AMG applied experience from its GT3 and GT4 racing programs across the suspension, lightweight construction, aerodynamics and chassis.

The GT R’s electronically controlled suspension was replaced by a manually adjustable coilover system. Spring preload could be mechanically altered, while compression and rebound damping could also be individually adjusted, allowing the chassis to be tuned more precisely for circuit use.

The hardware surrounding it became considerably more specialised.

A lightweight carbon-fibre anti-roll bar was used at the front, while an adjustable hollow steel anti-roll bar was fitted at the rear. Additional Uniball spherical bearings were fitted to the upper rear wishbones, reducing compliance and helping maintain more accurate wheel geometry under load.

A carbon-fibre shear panel underneath the rear of the car further increased structural rigidity.

Aerodynamics received the same level of attention.

The front splitter extended further forward and was stabilised by metal supports. Carbon-fibre flics were added around the front corners, while extraction louvres above the front wheels helped release pressure from the wheel arches and reduce front lift.

At the rear, additional aerodynamic elements worked with the revised diffuser and fixed rear wing to increase stability at speed.

The resulting package generated an additional 99 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.

AMG attacked weight at the same time.

Extensive carbon fibre, lightweight forged wheels, carbon-fibre bucket seats and carbon-ceramic brakes contributed to a reduction of approximately 25 kg compared with the GT R.

But the 4.0-litre V8 remained at exactly 430 kW and 700 Nm.

The effectiveness of that philosophy was demonstrated at the Nürburgring.

Before the GT R PRO had made its full public debut, AMG GT3 racing driver Maro Engel took a development car around the Nordschleife.

The lap time was 7:04.632.

Roughly six seconds had been removed from the GT R’s lap without increasing engine output.

Production was restricted to 750 examples worldwide, with only 15 allocated to Australia.

The Black Series would later push the original AMG GT platform considerably further in outright performance, but the GT R PRO remains distinct for the way it achieved its gains.

Rather than simply increasing power, AMG concentrated on the areas that determine how effectively that performance could be deployed.

Aerodynamics. Weight. Suspension. Grip. Chassis control.

The engine stayed the same.

The car around it became considerably more capable.

‍

‍FINAL SUMMARY

The AMG GT R PRO is not significant simply because only 750 were produced worldwide.

Its appeal comes from what AMG chose to do with the GT R platform.

The already formidable 430 kW and 700 Nm twin-turbocharged V8 was left unchanged. Instead, AMG concentrated on the areas that could make the car genuinely faster: aerodynamics, suspension, chassis rigidity, reduced weight and grip.

The result was a Nürburgring lap roughly six seconds quicker than the GT R despite identical engine output.

This example complements that engineering with an especially strong buyer proposition.

With just 1,257 km from new, it is one of only 15 allocated to Australia.

Same power as the GT R. But a far more serious interpretation of what the AMG GT could be.
